I chose to do my research on Social Networking: A Purposeful Loss of Privacy. I believe we can all agree for the most part that social networking is great. It connects everyone instantaneously and you can see what is going on in a matter of seconds but when there is a good side, there is a bad which in this case is the sense of privacy. I would like to delve into the most obvious invasion of privacy which is the advertisements that appear after you talk about something or shop for something. I also want to talk about how in recent years potential employers have begun to look at new recruits' social media accounts as part of their hiring process. I think this is important as part of the analysis because social networking sites are a platform for people to represent themselves but now are unable to due to the possibility of losing a job opportunity. I may also touch upon the idea that people are posting personal information like email, full birthday, home address and telephone numbers which put them at a higher risk of identity theft. In the end, social networking is a great way to share content freely but we have to be cautious as to what we share and who we share with as you will face the consequences of privacy invasion and identity theft. This is a brief outline to which I plan to include more details as I continue to work on my research.
