Blog: Social Networking Sites

I have decided to look deeper at the following social networking sites: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn, to compare my impressions of each site.

Facebook, personally, has been the social networking site that I have been using for over 10 years now. Over the years, I can tell they have enhanced their platform to the needs and desires of the users. I originally used the platform as a way to connect with my friends at school and it was easy to talk to them with Facebook messenger. Then eventually Facebook included the marketplace so user can also sell items and Facebook also added stickers which could be used during a conversation. It is great to see a social networking site that I had began using over a decade ago and is still going strong. That means they are doing something right to be able to keep their users.

Twitter, I am not so familiar with in terms of me personally using the site but I have seen celebrities as well as politicians use it. From my understanding, it is a short and quick way to communicate to your followers in hope that you can be of use and interest to your audience. That would explain why there is a 280 character limit per tweet which I may also infer is because no one wants to sit there spending hours reading instead they would want something that they can understand what is going on in a few words.

From what I interpret, Instagram is a platform for people to share their pictures. Though Twitter and Facebook you can share photos with your followers and friends, Instagram is more of a photo-sharing app that allows users to edit and upload their photos or videos. In a way, Instagram is like a picture that says a thousand words with usually a brief caption and possibly added hashtags.

Lastly, LinkedIn is what I perceived as the professional social networking site. It is completely different from the other three mentioned, in my opinion, because the other three is more about you as a person outside of work or school. With LinkedIn, you are trying to gain connections to appeal to recruiters in hopes for a job offer. Instead of showcasing your travels or good food or lavish lifestyle like you would on other social media sites, LinkedIn is more for showcasing your education, your work experience, leadership skills, etc. basically what you would want the employer to see, that you are a good candidate to be working for that company.
