Creativity and New Media
To showcase my creativity using new media tools, I decided to utilize one of the most popular social media platforms, Instagram. Instagram is a video and photo-sharing social networking platform. With photos, you can utilize their editing features to enhance your photo. When adding editing features to your current photo, you can really enhance the colors and vividness of the photo. Instagram also has the feature where you can apply an edit tool to alter your original picture and when you tap on the picture, it will show you the before and after to show you how much of a change it makes from the original picture.
I have taken a picture of a sunrise during my trip in Puerto Rico and made the following edits to it to enhance and accentuate the image:
1. Adjust the orientation to 1.15 degrees to straighten the image and have the line between the ocean and the sky be as near 180 degrees as possible to achieve the horizontal perspective.
2. Set contrast to 38 to enhance the dark and bright parts of the picture.
3. Set structure to 5 to add detail and texture to the top part of the photo where the clouds are a bit blurred.
4. Set warmth to 33 to balance and enhance the warmer-toned colors like orange, red and yellow.
5. Set highlights to -73 to lower the brighter parts of the picture to really accentuate where the sun is and you can slightly see the sun's rays.
6. Set vignette to 23 to create a dark border that helps guide the viewer's eyes towards the center where the sun is to grab the viewer's attention as to how blindly beautiful the sunrise is.
What these edits achieve is a balance between bright and dark, enhancement in colors, a shift from dull and one-dimensional to vibrant and structural, and has a purpose, to draw your attention to one part, the sunrise.
